The Washington-Carver Half Dollar was issued between 1951 to 1954. One of the reasons given for issuing this coin may have been to oppose the spread of Communism. The reverse featured the United States with "USA" across it, "Freedom and Opportunity for All" & "Americanism" around the edge. Gorgeous bright complexion commemorative half dollars are rare - ours will always be hand selected for quality, collectability and eye appeal.  You'll love your coin!

Commemorative coins were issued by the United States Mint to raise funds for special interest projects and programs. First issued in 1892 to support the World’s Columbian Exposition, vintage Commemoratives were an exciting new way to collect US Mint coins. Starting with silver half dollars depicting Christopher Columbus, the US Mint would expand their offerings to issuing gold and silver commemoratives to honor a broad array of important American icons, places and historic events. In total the Mint struck 50 different silver commemorative coin designs and 9 different gold commemorative coin designs. Vintage commemorative coins were issued between 1892 and 1954 and were typically silver half dollars. The mint also struck a silver quarter, a silver dollar, several gold dollars, quarter eagles, and a $50 gold piece. Mintages varied widely but most were quite low, with many struck in the low thousands and some as lows as the hundreds. Profits earned from the coins were typically funded projects or anniversary celebrations. Commemorative coins have long been valued for their low mintages, incredible artwork and creative designs. High quality examples can be quite scarce - yet somehow, this series is perennially undervalued. A recommended addition to every collection!
