In January 1909, the Mint engaged Brenner to design a cent depicting Abraham Lincoln, the late president. The year 1909 marked the 100-year anniversary when Lincoln was born. The cent was the first coin that had the design of a U.S. president. The coin is originally 95% copper. The coin was changed for a year to zinc-coated steel in 1943 as copper was needed to aid war efforts. The mint reverted it back to 95% copper until 1982. Inflation caused copper to be too expensive resulting in the composition to be changed to zinc with the outer layer being copper.\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"US Mint","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":44294941442286,"sku":"CTV005403","price":59.95,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":false}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0444\/1086\/3773\/files\/s-l1600_45_-PhotoRoom.png-PhotoRoom.png?v=1692808271","url":"https:\/\/www.coinstv.net\/products\/1961-lincoln-cent-large-date-ngc-pf68-rd-cameo","provider":"CoinsTV","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
