The year 1990 could be said to be a repeat of 1989 for the Uncirculated Silver Eagle: once again, mintages inched higher as demand increased steadily from the previous year, while the spot price of silver temporarily plunged even lower due to the sudden influx of United States silver. Silver went from $5.51 per ounce in 1989 to $4.82 in 1990, while bullion Silver Eagles mintages for the year came to 5,840,110, around 12% higher than 1989 mintages.
The lower price of silver itself made bullion silver cheaper, and thus opened the door to more investors. The increasing usage of the World Wide Web played no small role, as investors could collaborate and share news of market prices instantly. Hobbyist websites devoted to coin collecting would continue to spring up throughout the 1990s as the Internet boomed, bringing in new collectors and serving as a gathering point for practiced veteran collectors as well.
While MS70 specimens in bullion are attainable for 1990, no known population of slabbed PCGS MS70s exist for bullion Silver Eagles. Proofs in perfect condition are plentiful from this year, however, showing a marked division between serious collectors in it for the long term and precious metal speculators who cared for nothing but the melt value.
