For at least the first eight months of the year 2001, the United States continued to putter along in relative prosperity. While the price of silver dipped slightly to $4.37 for the year, the stock market was continuing to thrive and investors had gotten over their Y2K jitters. Bullion Silver Eagles minted at 9,001,711, missing the previous year's mark by only about 200,000. It is easy to overlook the first nine months of American history in 2001. America had a new president sworn in who started issuing tax cuts, Microsoft launched Windows XP, and AOL and Time Warner merged. The Internet was now a daily fact of life in American homes, rather than a novelty for "geeks," and the numismatic community benefited from increasing free trade of information about their hobby. The economy was serenely upbeat. The ensuing economic chaos in the years to come would impact the coin market, but for now, everything was stable. It was the last three months of 2001 that would shake the coin world for years to come. Beyond the infamous 9/11 attacks, the Enron stock market scandal shook up the investor world as well. It is significant that the attack on the World Trade Center was aimed at the financial nerve center of US commerce. Bullion silver shows a huge spike in sales for the last two months of 2001. Perfect specimens of bullion Silver Eagles are scarce.
