The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were supposed to have been built by King Nebuchadnezzar II, who ruled from 605 to 562 BCE. The story says that he decided to build the Gardens as a gift for his queen, Amytis who was unhappy in his dry desert kingdom. The name is because the garden 'hung in the air as if by magic'. Beautiful flowers and massive trees grew on the stepped terraces of the hanging gardens that rose high into the sky. This was made possible by an ingenious irrigation system. No historical remains of them have ever been found. Despite there being no historical remains, it is one of the seven wonders of the world.
