Handstruck with a hammer
Minted from the early 17th century until just after the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate in 1869, Japan made gold coins. These coins are reminders of a time when Japan was mostly agricultural, with a feudal system and isolated from other countries.
During that time, Japan was ruled by traditional samurai lords who had followed their warrior beliefs for more than a thousand years. In Japanese, they called silver coins 'gin' and gold coins 'kin'. For example, a silver coin worth one bu was called an 'ichibu gin,' which means 'one-bu silver.' Similarly, a gold coin worth one bu was called an 'ichibu kin,' which means 'one-bu gold.'
These smaller gold coins have an unusual rectangular shape with finely beaded borders, similar to a small bar or ingot. They are decorated with exotic Japanese calligraphy and stylized paulownia flowers, showing the traditional samurai style of Japan.
