The year 2002 kicked off with a huge bang as far as the US precious metals market is concerned. Bullion sales of Silver Eagles reached 10,539,026, reaching the 8-digit mark for the first time in fifteen years. The price of silver rose in accordance, at $4.60 an ounce. This silver price was still modest compared to the 2000 price of $4.95, but silver was now launching on a price climb that would see gains each year throughout the rest of the decade. Economically, the United States was chaotic. Not only had the country been launched into war with Afghanistan with Iraq right around the corner, but the 9/11 attacks impacted the banking and stock market industries tremendously. Many in the financial sector were lost in the attacks, and much data and physical paperwork vanished as well. The stock market was reeling from the twin shocks of the Enron scandal and the bursting of the "Dot Com Bubble," and began a steady decline by March. The NASDAQ index fell by September to exactly half the value it had in January. The US dollar itself fell in value until it was on a 1-to-1 basis with the Euro. To say that precious metals started to look like an attractive investment would be making an understatement. By December of 2002, bullion Silver Eagles alone minted and sold 2,490,000 in just that month alone. Not only silver, but gold and platinum would show record numbers in the years to come. Bullion specimens of 2002 Silver Eagles in perfect MS70 have become increasingly scarce.
