Everything that need be said about the 2009 market for Silver Eagles can be summed up in the observation that no proofs were produced. No burnished Silver Eagles were produced either. And there were no commemorative special strikes issued either. Silver Eagles in 2009 were all bullion sales. As far as the public was concerned in 2009, all they cared to see on a hunk of silver was "1 OZ FINE SILVER." this was the first year since the 1986 inception of the Silver Eagle series that a proof had not been produced. Bullion Silver Eagles were minted and sold to a total of 30,459,000. By law, the US Mint has to honor demand for bullion first. There is no law compelling them to issue proofs or any other kind of fancy issue; this is voluntary. So all of the silver blanks that the US Mint was able to allot went just for the bullion strikes. The Mint rationed Silver Eagle strikes in 2009 until June, then lifted the ration, only to see demand swarm again until they had to halt strikes and then begin strikes under a ration again. The price of silver remained surprisingly stable considering this development. The average actually finished the year out at a low of $14.67 an ounce, while during the year it had fallen to $10.51 and by December had spiked to $19.18. Precious metal prices across the board were experiencing similar roller-coaster rides. During this same period, troy ounces of gold and platinum were bouncing in variations of as much as the hundreds of dollars. The Great Recession was in full swing. Markets all over the world were feeling the impact. Not only had the subprime mortgage crisis crashed the housing market, but banks were teetering on the brink of failing and Wall Street was in free fall. From this era we get the federal takeover of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the phrase "too big to fail" and the subsequent US bailouts of these banks, and movements like "Occupy Wall Street," an Internet-led populist movement to protest the state of the economy at the presumed doorstep of those responsible.
