Silver Eagles issued on the first day have the advantage of being slightly higher-grade, since the dies tend to wear down gradually over the year. Which is not to say that coins produced at the end of the year aren't worth an MS70 grade, nor to imply that the first coin sold was necessarily the first coin struck. It's just nice to have for that extra sparkle of luster. 

Somewhere along the way with these Mercanti-signed special Silver Eagles, we should mention that they won't be available forever. In 2021, the US Mint switched over to a different reverse design. John Mercanti held the post of Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, from the inception year of the Silver Eagle program in 1986 to his well-earned retirement in 2010. His iconic heraldic eagle design has been a bold feature of the Silver Eagle, so 2017 is one of the last four years to own this distinctive design in the series. 

While we honor Mercanti, let's not forget the classic Walking Liberty design on the obverse, by Adolph A. Weinman in 1916. This makes 2017 just past the 100th anniversary mark for the classic Walking Liberty image. You have to give it its due: they don't make them like this anymore.
