In celebration of the historic Spanish Pillar Dollar, the Perth Mint proudly presents the 1 oz Silver 225th Anniversary of Australian Proclamation Coin—a stunning tribute to one of the most influential coins in early global commerce. Struck in .9999 fine silver with an extremely limited mintage of just 30,000 coins worldwide, this release honors the pivotal role of the 1797 Proclamation, which established foundational currency in colonial Australia.

The obverse features the Dan Thorne effigy of His Majesty King Charles III, along with inscriptions denoting the coin’s weight, purity, and monetary denomination of 1 Dollar. The reverse design beautifully reimagines the iconic Spanish Pillar Dollar—also known as the peso or “piece of eight”—featuring the Spanish Crown and two hemispheres representing the Old World and the New, unified under the inscription “VTRAQUE” (Latin for “both are one”).

Flanking the globe are the famed Pillars of Hercules, each wrapped in S-shaped banners inscribed with “PLVS VLTRA” (meaning “more beyond”)—a powerful nod to Spanish imperial ambition. Many historians credit this design as the inspiration for the modern dollar sign ($).
