This ancient Roman coin was issued under Emperor Gallienus, who ruled during one of the most unstable periods in Roman history, known as the “Age of Chaos” (AD 253–268). Amid invasions, civil wars, and plagues, Gallienus still managed to reform the military and maintain imperial control for over a decade. This double denarius, or Antoninianus, is struck in billon, a silver-copper alloy commonly used during this era due to economic collapse and silver shortages. Despite the turmoil of its time, this coin survives in exceptional condition and has been certified Mint State by NGC, an uncommon grade for coins over 1,700 years old.

The obverse features a detailed portrait of Gallienus, often wearing a radiate crown, while the reverse may depict gods, personifications, or military symbolism reflecting the emperor’s struggle to preserve Rome’s power.
