Understanding Coin Grading: AU vs BU vs MS Explained

Coin grading is how collectors and dealers describe the condition, and ultimately, the value, of a coin.

Here's what the common grades mean:

  • AU (About Uncirculated): Slight signs of wear, mostly on high points, but still near-mint in appearance.
  • BU (Brilliant Uncirculated): No wear from circulation, though not always perfectly struck or flawless.
  • MS (Mint State): Coins graded on a 60-70 scale. MS70 is a flawless coin straight from the mint, while MS60 is the lowest uncirculated quality.

Conclusion: Understanding grading helps you make smarter purchases and know what to expect in value. It's one of the most important parts of being a confident collector.
