In 1854 and 1855, the U.S. Mint responded to a pressing problem—the silver in its quarters was worth more than their face value. To discourage melting and hoarding, the Mint slightly reduced the coins’ weight and marked the change with a pair of small arrows flanking the date. These Seated Liberty Quarters, designed by Christian Gobrecht, feature Lady Liberty seated with a shield and liberty cap-topped staff, symbolizing vigilance and freedom. Each example in this Grab Bag is in Extremely Fine (XF) condition, retaining sharp design details and rich historic charm.
