The Flying Eagle Cent also marked the U.S. Mint's transition from the bulky Large Cent to the smaller-sized cent format that would eventually become the standard for American pennies. Because the Large Cent's size and pure copper composition had become too costly to produce, the new cent used less than half the copper per coin, making it more economical and convenient for everyday commerce.

The obverse features a bold flying eagle, while the reverse showcases a wreath surrounding the denomination—an especially distinctive design since the Flying Eagle Cent is one of the few U.S. coins to feature an eagle on the obverse instead of a portrait.
