The 1858 Flying Eagle Cent Small Letters – NGC MS63 is a classic piece of early U.S. coinage history. Struck for just three years between 1856 and 1858, the Flying Eagle Cent was America’s first small-size cent, replacing the large copper cents of earlier decades. This 1858 issue features the desirable Small Letters variety, easily recognized by the tighter spacing in the legends.
With a mintage of 24,600,000, the 1858 Small Letters Cent is far more available than the scarce 1856 issue, yet examples in Mint State condition remain scarce and highly collectible. This coin has been graded MS63 by NGC, placing it among the finer known survivors. The NGC population for this grade is just 211 coins, adding to its appeal for registry set collectors.
The obverse showcases James B. Longacre’s striking design of a flying bald eagle, wings outstretched in motion. The reverse bears a wreath encircling the denomination “ONE CENT,” a design that would influence future U.S. cent coinage. Even after more than 160 years, this piece retains sharp details and original mint luster.
Encapsulated by NGC for long-term protection, this historic cent offers both investment potential and a tangible link to mid-19th century America. Its combination of condition, variety, and low population makes it a standout addition to any U.S. coin collection.
