This stunning 1860 $1 Bank of America note from Providence, Rhode Island, is a remarkable piece of American history, preserved in GEM Uncirculated condition and graded PMG 65. Issued during a tumultuous period in American history, these notes were printed by the renowned American Bank Note Company but were never circulated. As the Union and Confederacy clashed on the battlefields, these notes remained untouched, making them highly sought-after by collectors today.
The note's central vignette is a work of art, featuring a majestic depiction of a woman seated on a throne beside an eagle perched on a shield, symbolizing strength and freedom. The bottom left corner showcases Adnah Sackett, the original president of the Bank of America, while the bottom right depicts a girl holding grain stalks, representing prosperity.
These notes were printed only on one side, a characteristic of many obsolete banknotes from the period. This was primarily due to the printing technology of the time and the fact that these notes were intended as "remainder" notes, meaning they were never issued, signed, or given serial numbers.
Incorporated in 1851, the Bank of America in Providence operated until 1890, when it was reorganized as the Bank of America Loan & Trust Company. The small hoard of these historic notes that we recently acquired is rapidly diminishing, and once they’re gone, they’ll be gone for good. Don't miss the opportunity to own a piece of history that has remained untouched for over a century!
