Celebrate the evolution of America’s five-cent coin with this fascinating 1866–1883 & 1776–2026 Nickel Two-Coin Set, pairing the oldest nickel design ever issued with the newest nickel commemorating America’s Semiquincentennial. This unique collection bridges 160 years of U.S. numismatic history, giving collectors the opportunity to own both the beginning and the latest chapter of the nickel series in one presentation.
The first coin is an authentic 1866–1883 Shield Nickel, certified ICG Genuine, representing the very first nickel coinage struck by the United States Mint. Introduced in 1866 following the Civil War, the Shield Nickel marked a significant shift in American coinage and remains a highly sought-after piece of 19th-century numismatic history. Owning a Shield Nickel means holding the coin that started the nickel denomination as we know it today.
Complementing this historic classic is the 1776–2026-D Jefferson Nickel, graded ICG MS66 FS (Full Steps) and designated an Initial Release. Issued to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, this Semiquincentennial nickel showcases a special dual-dated design and exceptional strike quality. The coveted Full Steps designation confirms sharp detail on Monticello’s steps, a feature highly prized by modern nickel collectors.
Together, these coins create a compelling display of America’s numismatic journey from the Reconstruction Era to the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration. The contrast between the historic Shield Nickel and the modern Semiquincentennial issue makes this set both educational and collectible, appealing to collectors of all experience levels. It is a meaningful way to showcase the remarkable longevity and evolution of the U.S. five-cent denomination.
