The 1906 $20 Gold Certificate represents one of the final issues of large-sized U.S. paper money backed directly by gold. Before the Gold Recall of 1933, Americans could exchange this note at a bank for a $20 Gold Double Eagle coin struck in 90% pure gold. Today, these notes stand as tangible relics of a bygone era in American currency.
When President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102 on April 5, 1933, all gold coins and gold certificates were mandated to be turned in to the Federal Reserve. By May 10 of that year, the government had absorbed more than $300 million in gold coins and $470 million in gold certificates, making survivors from earlier series like this one incredibly scarce. The 1906 issue is especially prized as it sits among the last of its kind.
The front design of this note features a striking portrait of President George Washington, flanked by intricate orange and black details that make Gold Certificates instantly recognizable. The reverse displays bold orange ink with an elaborate design, marking it distinctively from other forms of U.S. currency. Collectors treasure these notes not only for their artistry but also for their important place in U.S. economic history.
This example has been preserved in Very Fine (VF) condition, retaining sharp detail and strong color for a note well over a century old. Its level of preservation makes it an excellent addition for both advanced and emerging collectors seeking to own an iconic piece of America’s pre-Depression era monetary system.
