The 1909 release of the Lincoln Cent was a resounding success...but a mere 3 days after release, it fell into scandal. Artist and sculpter Victor David Brenner placed his initials, VDB, prominently on the reverse of the coin. The public and the media believed it was too prominent - and forced their removal - even though millions of coins had already circulated!
