A unique and fascinating set featuring two forms of a silver dollar from the same year!
In the early 1900s, U.S. currency was backed by the Gold Standard, and circulating coinage was minted with a significant precious metal content, such as silver. The Peace Dollar, struck from 1921 to 1935, was created to symbolize peace after World War I and boasted an impressive 90% silver content. During this era, silver certificates were also in circulation. These special notes, with a face value like any other $1 bill, featured George Washington at the center and blue numbering on the obverse. Silver certificates could be redeemed for a silver dollar at any time from a bank, a practice discontinued in the 1960s when U.S. currency was no longer backed by the value of silver and gold.
This unique set includes a 1923 Peace Dollar and a 1923 'Horse Blanket' Silver Certificate. The 1923 Silver Certificate, nicknamed the 'horse blanket' note due to its larger size compared to today's paper money, was colloquially said to be 'big enough' to cover a horse. Although not actually that large, this 1923 issue was the last of the oversized notes, with the size reduced thereafter as a cost-cutting measure by the U.S. Mint to the familiar dimensions of current currency.
This set offers a fascinating glimpse into the past with two forms of a silver dollar from the same year. Adding this set to your collection provides an opportunity to appreciate and learn from the rich numismatic history of the United States.
