In 1972, Great Britain celebrated the 25th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip. To honor this milestone, The Royal Mint issued a one-year-only commemorative crown coin—the first modern (decimal) crown-size coin of its kind. This release was not only a tribute to enduring royal love but also a significant numismatic first.

Each coin was struck in 28.28 grams of cupronickel (CuNi) with a diameter of 38.61 mm, making it similar in size to a U.S. silver dollar. Although these coins carried a face value of 25 pence, most banks and retailers in the United Kingdom refused to accept them as legal tender. Interestingly, they were only readily honored at Royal Mail post offices. With 7,452,100 circulation strikes and 150,000 Proof strikes, these coins remain a fascinating piece of modern British coinage history.

The obverse of the coin, designed by renowned artist Arnold Machin, features the crowned and draped bust of Queen Elizabeth II wearing the “Girls of Great Britain and Ireland” diamond tiara, a cherished wedding gift from her grandmother, Queen Mary. The Latin inscription around the portrait translates to “Elizabeth the Second, by the Grace of God, Queen, Defender of the Faith.”

On the reverse, the initials “E” and “P” for Elizabeth and Philip stand proudly beneath the Royal Crown, surrounded by intricate foliage and the figure of Eros symbolizing love. The dates “20 November 1947 – 1972” and the inscription “ELIZABETH AND PHILIP” complete this elegant tribute. Collectors cherish this coin not only for its beautiful design but also for its role in celebrating a royal marriage that endured for decades.
