If you ask the residents of south-western North America what the origin of the phoenix is, they're likely to answer that it is a figure of American folklore. After all, we have the city of Phoenix, Arizona, and numerous depictions of a fiery bird creature throughout Hispanic culture. Then you see this coin and you may be tempted to correct that point of origin to Asia instead. The actual truth is that the phoenix first appears in ancient Greek mythology, and possibly may have roots in Egyptian symbolism as well.
A phoenix is an immortal bird which is able to resurrect itself from its own ashes after it burns up, long associated with the sun. So it's a fitting metaphor for hope, faith, and renewal, wherever in the world it is found. The phoenix diffuses itself into world forklore, and may also influence other symbolic birds such as the eagle. In Korea, it is known by the name of "Bonghwang," and is found in Korean culture going back to the Joseon dynasty, whose emperor sat on the "Bonghwang throne." The phoenix has been the presidential seal of South Korea since 1967.
This coin, produced by KOMSCO (Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation), the official mint of South Korea, depicts a spectacular soaring phoenix on the obverse and a pair of phoenixes surrounding the logo of the country on the reverse. This exotic and rare piece is a must-add to your international coin collection, and a rare treasure for silver hoarders everywhere!
