  • Daniel Carr, owner of the Moonlight Mint, is one of the most fascinating people in modern numismatics. / ANACS Pop 75

  • In 2013, the Moonlight Mint acquired the rights to the name "Clark Gruber & Company"

  • Stunning fractional dollars were designed "in the spirit of the privately-minted pioneer California fractional coins from the mid-1800's".

Growing up fascinated by coins, Carr eventually became an engineer, and eventually developed his own 3D modeling software for sculpting and engraving design. In 2004 he adapted his software to work directly with CNC and engraving machines. In 2007, Carr bought a Grabner Coin Press, manufactured in Germany and capable of 400 tons of striking force. The press was government surplus, and had operated at the Denver Mint between 1986 and 2001. Carr restored the press himself in his Loveland, Colorado workshop. He began using the press, along with his VS3D sculpting software to strike his own privately-issued coins and medals. Thus the Moonlight Mint was born in 2008.

In 2013, the Moonlight Mint acquired the rights to the name "Clark Gruber & Company". Clark Gruber & Company were active during the Gold Rush, and would convert miner's gold into coins which were circulated in the Denver area and beyond. The US Government bought out the company in the 1860s, and eventually converted it into the Denver Mint. Now, with Carr's purchase of the Grabner Press from the Denver Mint, the story can come full circle as Carr acts as the Clark Gruber & Company spiritual successor, privately minting gold and silver coinage in the modern era. These stunning tokens feature beautiful, crisp strikes and incredible designs unlike anything else. These are truly special coins.
