Unlike our current Earth with its widely dispersed landmasses, Pangaea had a distinctive C-shape, with its vast expanse stretching between the northern and southern polar regions. It was surrounded by a gigantic ocean known as Panthalassa. Pangaea represents the latest in a series of supercontinents that have formed and broken apart over geological time, preceded by Gondwana, Euramerica, Rodinia (which broke apart 750 million years ago), and Columbia/Nuna (which existed around two billion years ago).
