The Shield Nickel represents one of the most historic and iconic designs in early U.S. coinage. Struck between 1866 and 1883, this distinctive five-cent piece was the first to be made from the durable copper-nickel alloy still used in nickels today. Its bold design, featuring a Union shield on the obverse, symbolizes strength and unity following the Civil War.

Designed by James B. Longacre, the Shield Nickel was originally introduced to replace the half dime and facilitate everyday commerce—particularly for paying postage and small transactions. Its composition made it far more practical and long-lasting than its silver predecessors.

Each of these collector-quality Shield Nickels has been carefully selected for its detail and eye appeal. You’ll notice the classic shield and intricate rays or cross patterns depending on the year—small details that reflect the artistry and history of the late 19th century.

Whether you’re expanding your U.S. type set or looking for a piece with deep historical value, the Shield Nickel makes a super cool addition to any collection. Its age, symbolism, and craftsmanship continue to capture the imagination of collectors over a century later.
