The Three Cent Silver, commonly known as the "Trime," is one of the most unusual and fascinating coins ever issued by the U.S. Mint. Minted from 1851 to 1873, this tiny coin was designed to facilitate easier transactions, especially with the reduced cost of postage from five cents to three. Its silver composition (75% silver, 25% copper) distinguished it from base-metal coins and helped it circulate alongside foreign currency then still used in everyday trade. While it was an innovative solution for its time, the Trime ultimately failed to achieve its goal and was discontinued, making surviving pieces all the more collectible.

This coin also holds an important place in U.S. numismatic history as the first to omit a portrait of Liberty—a bold move that set it apart visually and symbolically. On the obverse, you’ll find a six-pointed star and shield design; on the reverse, the Roman numeral "III" encircled by a wreath. Many of these coins were melted down after they fell out of circulation in the late 1800s, making them increasingly hard to find today.
